- │ Welcome to ConnectivEmail! │
- └────────────────────────────┘
-
- More than just e-mail, ConnectivEmail is full of features to help you get
- the most of your network. In addition to industry-standard MHS compatible
- electronic mail and telephone messaging, ConnectivEmail contains such office
- productivity features as private and shared Rolodexing, calendaring and
- scheduling, to-do lists, user-to-user and group chat, network utilties and
- much more. You'll find ConnectivEmail contains twice as many features as
- the leading MHS e-mail system at less than half the price.
-
- While ConnectivEmail is an industry-standard MHS application, you do not need
- to own MHS in order to benefit from the program. If you need only to send
- mail within your physical location on the same server, ConnectivEmail can
- deliver mail all by itself, eliminating the need for gateways or dedicated
- mail servers. In other words, everything you need to get started using
- ConnectivEmail is in one box.
-
- If you add MHS capabilities to your network in the future, ConnectivEmail
- instantly becomes a global electronic mail and messaging system,
- compatible with Novell's SMF-70 and SMF-71 standards. This allows you to
- send mail to other e-mail systems or networks, or connect all your
- office locations to create an enterprise-wide electronic mail and
- scheduling software package.

- │ Installation │ Page 1
- └──────────────┘
-
- You must be a SUPERVISOR or equivalent install ConnectivEmail.
-
- 1. Create a directory anywhere on a shared network volume, then make it
- the current directory. Use a volume that has the most space and/or
- has the least amount of traffic. Plan on using about 1 Megabyte per
- user for a mature installation.
-
- If you are upgrading from Einstein E-Mail, see the section
- "Upgrading From Einstein" in this document for important information.
-
- 2. Grant sufficient trustee rights to the new directory to those you
- want to be able to run the program. Users need all rights, except
- Supervisor and Access Control/Parental (See SYSCON).
-
- 3. Copy the contents of the ConnectivEmail diskette into the new directory
- created in step 1. For example: COPY A:\*.* F:\CONNECT
-
- 4. Run the ADMIN.EXE program from the directory created in step 1. You will
- be prompted to create a new installation. Follow the steps to completion.
- You will create a master User List and mailbox for each user when complete.
-
- 5. Run the CMAIL.EXE program with the following optional parameters:
-
- /R Run ConnectivEmail as a TSR, or Resident program. The
- default Hot Key is <Alt>+<Ins>.
-
- /MHS:(path) Specifies the location of the MHS server directory. The
- \MHS is assumed in the string, so you do not need to
- specify it. For instance, if MHS is installed on H:\MHS,
- you can use: /MHS:h:
-
- /H:(server) Specify an MHS HUB name instead of default server name
- obtained from the workstation environment. This is
- required only if your "home" MHS Hub name is different
- than your default physical server name.
-
- /PATH:(path) Location of ConnectivEmail server directory. This should
- point to the directory created in step 1. You must
- specify this option if you run the CMAIL.EXE program from
- a local hard disk or any location other than the main file
- server directory (where you installed ConnectivEmail).
-
- /SWAPPATH:(path) Write TSR temporary files to specified path. This
- should point to a local hard disk for optimal
- performance.
-
- 6. ConnectivEmail installation Complete! See the remainder of this document
- to see how you can integrate ConnectivEmail with your network.
- ┌─────────────────────────┐ Page 2
- │ Upgrading From Einstein │
- └─────────────────────────┘
-
- If you are upgrading from Einstein E-mail (ConnectivEmail's previous name),
- you need to run the UPGRADE.EXE program after completing the installation.
- You MUST install ConnectivEmail in a new directory, not on top of your
- existing Einstein data.
-
- ┌──────────────────────────────────────────────┐
- │ Upgrading from Older ConnectivEmail Versions │
- └──────────────────────────────────────────────┘
-
- If you are upgrading from an earlier release of ConnectivEmail, you simply
- need to copy the contents of the new distribution diskette on top of your
- old ConnectivEmail data. Then, run the new ADMIN program and pack all your
- user's mailboxes (Select Mailbox then Pack from the Main Admin Menu).
-
- ┌───────────────────────────────┐
- │ The ConnectivEmail Batch File │
- └───────────────────────────────┘
-
- The sample batch file below is an example of loading ConnectivEmail as a TSR
- program. Note the use of DOS' EXIST command to verify the existance of a
- temporary swap directory, and deletes any files if they exist in the directory.
-
- ┌───────────────────────────────────────────┐
- │ Example CONNECT.BAT │
- ├───────────────────────────────────────────┤
- │ @echo off │
- │ map root m:=sys:apps\connect >>nul │
- │ c: │
- │ if not exist c:\temp\*.* md c:\temp │
- │ if exist c:\temp\*. del c:\temp\*. │
- │ cd\temp │
- │ m:cmail /r /path:m: /swappath:c:\temp │
- └───────────────────────────────────────────┘
-
- Note that you should never load a TSR program from Novell's login script.
- Instead, have the login script exit to a batch file with the command:
- EXIT "z:connect.bat"
- ┌─────────────────────────────┐
- │ The ConnectivEmail Variable │
- └─────────────────────────────┘
-
- If you do not want to type the startup parameters for ConnectivEmail each
- time, create a DOS environment variable to contain all startup parameters.
-
- From a DOS prompt or batch file:
- SET CONNECT=/path:m: /swappath:c:\temp /r
-
- From a Login Script:
- DOS SET CONNECT="/path:m: /swappath:c:\temp /r"
-
- Using an environment variable allows you to place a copy of CMAIL.EXE
- into a public directory (such as SYS:PUBLIC) and run ConnectivEmail
- from any directory simply by typing CMAIL at the DOS prompt.
- ┌─────────────────────┐ Page 3
- │ Resident (TSR) Mode │
- └─────────────────────┘
-
- ConnectivEmail can optionally be made to operate in TSR mode simply by
- supplying a startup parameter on the command line. If the "/R" parameter
- exists on the command line, ConnectivEmail will load as a TSR program. Then,
- you'll be able to press ConnectivEmail's hot key while working in other
- programs, and have it pop up right on top of your work in progress. When
- you are finished with ConnectivEmail, another press of the hot key will
- return you to the exact place you left off.
-
- The ConnectivEmail TSR takes up about 19K low DOS RAM. This kernal cannot
- be loaded into high memory using the LH command. You should load
- ConnectivEmail after any other TSR programs when possible.
-
- If you load ConnectivEmail as a TSR program, you should have at least 2
- megabytes of total system memory. Your CONFIG.SYS file should contain a
- memory manager such as HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE. If you do not know how
- to configure 386 workstation memory, please consult your DOS manual. While
- we use the the following CONFIG.SYS on PC-compatible workstations running
- DOS 5.0 and higher, your needs may differ slightly.
-
- ┌───────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
- │ Example CONFIG.SYS │
- ├───────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
- │ shell=c:\dos\command.com /e:512 /p │
- │ device=c:\dos\himem.sys │
- │ devicehigh=c:\dos\emm386.exe noems frame=e000 │
- │ devicehigh=c:\dos\ansi.sys │
- │ dos=high,umb │
- │ files=40 │
- │ buffers=40 │
- └───────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
- ┌──────────────────────────┐
- │ Special Group Membership │
- └──────────────────────────┘
-
- ConnectivEmail allows members of the network group "CSUPER" special access
- priviledges throughout the program. You should make yourself a member of this
- group, as well as others who you would like to be able to create Group Folders,
- Group Calendars and Group Address Books.
-
- ┌──────────────────────────┐ Page 4
- │ The /SWAPPATH: Parameter │
- └──────────────────────────┘
-
- During normal operation, ConnectivEmail creates temporary work files for
- various functions. If you do not specify the /SWAPPATH: parameter on
- the command line or in the CONNECT environment variable, ConnectivEmail
- will create these files in the directory in which ConnectivEmail was
- started.
-
- If users start the program from a drive/directory in which they do not
- have sufficient WRITE rights, these files will not be able to be written
- and the program may fail. Make sure users start the program from a
- directory in which they have sufficient rights (like their home directory),
- or use the /SWAPPATH: parameter to specify a local disk (preferred) or
- network directory in which they have sufficient rights.
-
- Obviously, if ConnectivEmail's temporary files are created on a network
- drive, program performance can suffer if the network is heavily loaded, or
- the network drive is "disk-bound." FOR OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE, THE /SWAPPATH:
- PARAMETER SHOULD SPECIFY A LOCAL HARD DISK DRIVE if possible. If you
- work in a mixed environment (some machines have local hard disks and
- others do not), you can use an environment variable and batch file
- commands such as:
-
- set swap=c:\swap
- if not exist c:\*.* set swap=f:\users\%login_name%
- set connect=/path:m:\connect /swappath:%swap% /mhs:f:
-
- ┌──────────────────┐
- │ Using UNLOAD.EXE │
- └──────────────────┘
-
- Use UNLOAD.EXE to remove the resident portion of ConnectivEmail from
- memory. Use caution when unloading CMAIL! If you unload the
- resident portion of the program and it was not the last TSR loaded,
- or you are shelled out to DOS in another application, your workstation
- will probably become unstable. Data loss can occur.
- ┌──────────────┐ Page 5
- │ Registration │
- └──────────────┘
-
- By default, ConnectivEmail operates in Demonstration mode. This mode allows
- you to create e-mail messages no longer than 5 lines, and displays a
- notification of this fact every 10 or so minutes. Attempts to add text to
- a message that would exceed the 5 line limit will fail. This includes block
- operations such as Cut & Paste, etc.
-
- In addition to the 5 line limitation and demonstration mode banner, the
- demonstration version does not contain all the necessary print forms
- for the Calendar and Address Books, or the files necessary to create
- the spelling dictionary. These files are supplied upon registration.
-
- When you have decided ConnectivEmail is the package for you, call us for a
- a live activation key. With this activation key, the 5 line message
- limitation is removed and the program no longer displays the demonstration
- mode notification. You will then receive a standard package from us, including
- the latest version of the program, manuals, additional print forms and
- mailing label formats, warranty and license agreements, BBS access, and
- 1 year free technical support.
